The Four Interview Personalities: Which One Are You?

Have you ever thought about your personality during a job interview? Just like everyone has different personalities, you would be surprised to learn that people also have different interview styles! Interviewology CEO and career social media personality Anna Papalia has discovered four main interview personality types, and they are as follows:

Charmers
During interviews, charmers take over the meeting like they would on the main stage. Primarily extroverts, they will usually prioritize the friendship aspect of interviews, and their main objective is to make a friend out of the interviewer. At the end of the day, a charmer’s main objective is to establish a good connection with people, even if no job comes out of the interview, as it allows for future opportunities or recruitment.
Challengers
Challengers, on the other hand, are not shy about playing devil’s advocate in interviews. While a charmer might focus on their first impression, challengers will concentrate on showing off their value by asking challenging questions about the position to get all their doubts cleared. They are also the most independent of interview personalities, as they rarely change their answers to please the interviewer.
Examiners
Examiners might be the most introverted out of all the personality types. Like their title, examiners will often focus on the facts and aim to effectively prove they are the best fit for the job to the interviewer. Their approach is very straightforward, and their answers might be very evidence-based.
Harmonizers
The mediator interview personality, a harmonizer is similar to a charmer in their extroversion, but they differ from charmers by their teamwork-based approach. Harmonizers are great at balancing and adapting to questions and conversation flows and highlighting skills that can benefit them in group settings. They will also contradict challengers by prioritizing listening and how they can fit into a company.

Before you ask: No, there is no “right or wrong” interview personality, as everyone is different, and each type brings something dynamic and unique to an organization. What it is important to note, however, is to identify what kind of interviewee you are – or if you share characteristics with several personality types – as well as their strengths and weaknesses to figure out how to effectively use your personality to secure your next job or internship. So, what personality type speaks to you the most?
