Career-Related New Year’s Resolutions

1515There is a widespread misconception that New Year’s resolutions are tough to uphold, maintain, or easily breakable. Even if it has been way past January 1st, the best time to set goals for yourself is the present, regardless of the time! As such, as the semester is starting and January begins to wrap up, here are a couple of suggestions for career resolutions you can set for yourself this year:

  • Expand your professional network wherever you go! When networking, focus more on making valuable connections in your field rather than meeting the most people
  • Prioritize your personal growth by practicing different skills and fields. This will help you gain work experience you never knew you needed!
  • Start applying for internships that allow you to grow professionally in your field! The sooner you apply, the better your chance of finding your best match.
  • Check to see if your resume and LinkedIn profile are current with your latest experience, awards, and other requirements! Also, make sure to have different variations of your resume that fit different formats and company needs.
  • Diversify your career options! You never know if your passions and aspirations fit other industries, companies, or locations.
  • Continue to pursue a strong online presence that showcases your professionalism and achievements.
  • Find the right balance between applying for jobs, schoolwork, and your own personal development. All these will add up to a bigger and better you!
  • Rehearse and practice interview settings by yourself, peers, or with a Career Coach. (You can find more information here!)
  • If you wish to continue your education after graduation, start to look into different graduate programs.

And remember, the sooner or later you get to achieving these is not what matters, but whether or not these align with your values and if you believe these will allow you to succeed and promote positive career development. Good Luck!
