Networking During the Holidays: Hit or Miss?

The holiday season is fast approaching, and one might quickly think that means there are few opportunities to build up your career due to everyone celebrating with friends and family and taking the last two weeks of the year off. However, despite a slow hiring season, you would be surprised how much you can advance careerwise. After all, humans are natural networkers, and we thrive off of making connections and bonding with anyone at any time. So, given the proximity of the start of winter break, here are some things to note if you plan on networking during this time:
Several benefits come with networking on holidays. On the one hand, it is a lot easier to connect with people in a more relaxed setting, and people can see you in a more personal tone and ask you more casual questions like “How’s the job search going?” People’s increased relaxation during this time also allows them to access different opportunities that might not present themselves now. More visibility can also come to you, and relatives or family friends can connect you with people you wouldn’t have thought of. Also, remember the courage and commitment that comes with you even thinking about this topic during your time off, and others will note your determination.
However, networking during the holidays is not foolproof, as specific challenges come with doing so. On the one hand, depending on the person, they may prefer to refrain from having work conversations over break. Holiday parties can also be widely distracting, thanks to factors like crowds and maybe even music. Miscommunications also occur as holiday events are arguably too informal.
Should you completely shut off the idea of networking during the holidays? Before you refrain from this idea, remember to be mindful of certain factors, such as that everyone will react differently. Whether you get a positive or negative outcome out of this connection, you will continue to move forward careerwise and see if this method gives you success. But to keep it safe, it is recommended to be mindful of varying factors, such as the occasion it is being brought up, a satisfying balance between professionalism and casual interactions, and, of course, this would not be a CareerEdge blog without us telling you to follow up with everyone! Happy Networking!
