Topics to Discuss with your Career Coach

A significant resource that makes up the Pulsifer Career Development Center is undoubtedly the career coaches! They not only help guide you on all things career-building, but they are a great way to make meaningful connections with people on campus. If you’ve never talked to a career coach, it can be challenging to discuss topics on the spot with them or even steer you away from meeting with them due to a lack of discussion points. But even regardless of grade level, work experience, or other factors that you believe are good excuses to hold off meeting with one, here are some topics you can discuss and expand upon with career coaches!
Check-In and Next Steps
Think of doctor’s appointments. Sometimes, you go because you’re sick; other times, you check up on your health and well-being. The same applies to career coaches! Even if you have no extensive job interviews or application deadlines, checking up on how you are doing and any other concerns you might have regarding your career development is essential. Suppose you have no updates on jobs or interviews. In that case, career coaches can also instruct you on using your non-work experience in job interviews or resume buildup, whether building up your skillset or resourceful extracurriculars.
Confidence Building for Interviews
Public speaking and professional communication is something that tends to daunt people. Career coaches can help you overcome that! You can book a meeting with them and have a mock interview or ask for communication tips to sound more confident when speaking professionally. They can also highlight what experiences or skills you can discuss if you need more ideas.
Branding Consulting
Career coaches are aces on all things personal branding! Suppose you need to figure out where to start or how to implement personal branding that aligns with your values and skills. In that case, career coaches can guide you with on-campus resources and events, resume building, and offer off-campus resources you can be a part of to build on your branding.
Where Do I Start?
It is okay to be unsure where to start regarding career development or searching for jobs. That’s why career coaches are here for you! They do not expect you to come fully prepared with your credentials, like a job interview, but are hopeful to help you with anything and everything related to career development. So, if you are unprepared, starting from scratch, or trying to figure out what to do in a meeting with a career coach, they are more than happy to assist you in introducing you to career development.
