Should You Accept Your First Job Offer?

When you get an acceptance letter, your first instinct might be to jump and say yes to the company. However, before you do, take some time to consider all the factors. Does the work you will be doing excite you? What are past employees saying about the company? Is the pay what you are looking for?  There are so many more important questions you need to ask yourself before accepting a job offer.

Tip #1: Have Passion

The last thing you want to happen is to end up regretting taking the offer. Every day, you will be working around eight hours at this company, and if you do not enjoy the work you are doing, it’s going to take a toll on you. Something important to ask yourself is if you are passionate about the company. If you can’t get behind the message of the company, then that is a clear sign you probably won’t enjoy the work. You have to be passionate about the work you are doing.

Tip #2: Do Research

Before you say yes to the job offer, make sure you research the company. What are past employees saying? What does the company’s website say about its culture? These are some of the aspects you will want to look up before saying yes to the job. Also, a good statistic to look at if you can find it, is the employee retention rate. If there is a high employee retention rate, that means people are staying at the company.

Relating to this, make sure to research the growth opportunities at the company. You will want to make sure that the company allows for promotion, and that it is accessible to move up in roles.

Tip #3: Does the compensation match what you are looking for?

It is imperative that you know what your worth is. You need to recognize your value and find a compensation that you feel reflects what you can bring to the table. You should never be afraid to speak up for yourself and ask for compensation that reflects your hard work. When you are given your acceptance letter, see if the compensation is what you are looking for. If it is not, ask HR to reexamine your pay to something that is reasonable for both you and the company. Check out our blog on negotiating offers here
