3 Career Moves To Make In Your 20’s

As you approach another summer season (and possibly a new internship), here are three career moves that are recommended to make early on so that you not only advance faster through your career but are happy with your future role.

  1. Get as much work experience as you can!
    1. While you’re still at school, make sure to say yes to work experiences. Get involved on campus by trying out different organizations on campus. Say YES to leadership positions and executive board roles. Try out different internships and part-time jobs whenever you have time. If you need something with less commitment, search for seasonal roles. Unpaid internships are also great to look into during this time, to get even more exposure. The reason exposure is so crucial during the early stages of your career is to try out different roles. The quicker that you can figure out what tasks you like and dislike.
  2. Plan out your education.
    1. Once you narrow down what you may want to do for a full-time position, make sure that your educational goals align. This may mean getting your required 150 credits for CPA licensure, pursuing a master’s degree, pursuing an MBA, looking into a CFA license, or any other educational goals you’ve been thinking about.
    2. It will really help you to figure out and make a plan for your education because many licenses and titles will not only help you become a better candidate for those positions that you have your eyes on but will also allow you to get promoted faster.
  3. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Ask for feedback, collect it, and review it.
    1. No matter what role you go into, you will likely make an error or two along the way of learning your job. Even experts make mistakes. When this happens, make sure to ask for feedback. Take notes and compile your feedback to not only track your progress but continuously improve. Remember that it’s okay to mess up but always try to not make the same mistake twice.
