Position Focus:

Dual reporting to the Director of Labor Relations and the Associate Director of Best Practices, this position serves as the University’s primary relationship manager to Local 34 UNITE HERE, a union representing more than 3,500 clerical & technical employees at Yale, as well as to the Cedarhurst Teacher’s Union (of the American Federation of Teachers). This position will establish integrative practices across Labor Relations and Best Practices. (Best Practices is Yale’s union-management cooperation program with Local 34.) This role will direct the labor relations and cooperation support to the Yale School of Medicine, including clinical practices, in support of Yale’s contract with Local 34, including policy and strategy development, relationship-building, conflict resolution, process improvement, managerial training, bargaining, and day-to-day activities. As part of Best Practices, this role also will guide aspects of Yale’s union-management collaboration effort with Local 34, such as departmental consulting, C&T training, and/or contractual union-management project support. In addition, this position will provide support to special projects in Labor Relations or Best Practices. Initially, this position will supervise one senior labor relations representative, with future opportunity for career growth.

Essential Duties:

1. Partners with senior leadership in policy making; develops and strategically positions human resources goals and objectives to successfully attract, retain, and motivate a highly talented and diverse workforce. 2. Manages professional and managerial human resources staff and resources to drive financial, operational, and budgetary success within the human resources department. 3. Identifies and directs human resources staff and resources to drive financial, operational, and budgetary success within the human resources department. 4. Determines and develops goals for the work of their managerial and professional staff to execute human resources initiatives efficiently and effectively. 5. Directs and monitors work assignments to ensure they are proceeding on schedule and meet the established quality standards. 6. Translates HR Department level goals into functional level goals; writes and approves functional level goals. 7. Guided by policies, plans and procedures; identifies, manages, and resolves complex and non-standard technical, operational and organizational issues across one or more functional human resources areas; recommends, implements, and enforces new and improved solutions. 8. Recommends, analyzes and suggests policies, procedures and practices for consideration by senior leadership. 9. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations or related field and six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

General knowledge of labor relations practices.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Sound political instincts coupled with proven ability to assess organizational gaps and to affect organizational change or improvement in collaboration with others.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to establish constructive relationships with union leaders. Ability to influence and partner with senior leadership teams across the organization. Proven track record of working within or leading teams within an organization.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong conceptual, analytical and systems thinking abilities with organizational change (or industrial & organizational psychology), project management and planning knowledge and skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written and presentation skills. Able to set up and maintain high standards in all output (e.g. reports, graphics, project plans.). Advanced computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Masters in Industrial & Labor Relations, Industrial & Organizational Psychology, or MBA with concentration in Human Resources or Labor Relations. Experience in consulting to Sr. Managers in a demanding and rapidly changing environment on change initiatives of significant scope. Experience with training design and/or delivery and translating data to analyses and proposals for action.
