Summer Recruiting Preparation: Resume Updates + What to Do Now

Finance, Corporate Finance & Accounting, and FinTech Students,

As we start to think ahead to the next recruiting cycle, one of the most valuable things you can do now is update your resume.

📌 Here’s what you need to do:

  • Follow one of the standard resume templates
  • Review and apply the resume guidelines in the Launch Your Finance Career Guide
  • Make a genuine effort to improve content, formatting, and clarity
  • Get your resume to a point that reflects your best effort and is ready for refinement – not first-round editing or formatting fixes

🏢 And now this is where our office comes in…

After you’ve made your best effort, schedule an appointment with the Career Development Center for a resume review. We strongly encourage you to connect with us over the summer. Availability is much better now, and getting your resume finalized early will position you well as opportunities open over the summer and into the fall. Appointments can book out weeks in advance during the semester – take advantage of the time now, you’ll thank yourself later!

📣 A QUICK NOTE ON RECRUITING TIMELINES

Recruiting for some roles may begin as early as after the 4th of July – and in some cases, even earlier. Timelines vary by firm and industry, and opportunities can open quickly with little notice.

Stated deadlines are not guarantees. Many companies operate on a rolling basis, meaning applications are reviewed as they come in and positions may be filled well before the posted deadline. In some cases, applications may close earlier than expected once a sufficient candidate pool is reached.

Your best strategy: apply early. Being among the first applicants can meaningfully improve your chances of being reviewed and considered.

To stay in the loop, set up multiple notification channels for firms you’re interested in:

  • Follow companies on LinkedIn (go a step further and follow key recruiters as well!). This helps ensure opportunities and updates appear directly in your feed as they’re shared.
  • Follow companies on Handshake, if they have a profile there – you’ll receive notifications when new opportunities or relevant events are added.
  • Subscribe to “Talent Communities” or mailing lists on company websites to receive updates on recruiting activity and opportunities.

These are quick, simple actions, but they make a meaningful difference. Staying engaged early helps you stay informed, move faster when opportunities open, and positions you to be among the first applicants.
