Last week, I attended MLK 2025: Action for Justice, an annual Bentley tradition that commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s event featured José Francisco Ávila, a proud Garifuna and Afro-Latino Bentley alum, entrepreneur, social justice advocate, and author. Ávila shared his journey as a first-generation college student navigating Bentley when its student population was predominantly white. His story of resilience, cultural pride, and success was an inspiring testament to the impact of diversity and inclusion. He stated, “It was an honor to return to my alma mater to commemorate the life and enduring impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to share my experiences as a member of the Garifuna (Afro-Indigenous)” Ávila highlighted how Bentley has transformed into a more diverse and inclusive space. His message resonated with the importance of carrying Dr. King’s dream forward by embracing different cultures, fostering community, and striving for equity.
