How to Be Productive During Break

The end of a semester is a much-needed time to relax, recharge, and reflect. But we can also use this time to prepare for the next semester and get ahead of the game.

1. Reflect on the Past Semester

Take time to assess what went well and where you can improve.

Ask Yourself:

Which habits helped me succeed this semester?

Were there any challenges I could approach differently next time?

Tools to Try:

Use a journal or a note-taking app like OneNote to jot down your thoughts.

Bentley’s Academic Support Services offers workshops that can help you prepare for a stronger semester ahead.

2. Build Your Skills

Breaks are perfect for learning something new that complements your academic or career goals.

Enroll in free or low-cost online courses on platforms like LinkedIn Learning (free with Bentley credentials) or Coursera.

Improve technical skills like Excel, Tableau, or Python, which are highly valued in the workforce.

Dive into Bentley’s FalconNet resources for skill-building workshops or webinars.

3. Update Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Use the downtime to polish your professional presence.

Highlight your achievements from the past semester, including group projects, leadership roles, or internships.

Connect with professors, peers, or industry professionals you’ve worked with recently to expand your network.

Tip: Take advantage of the Pulsifer Career Development Center’s virtual appointments for resume reviews and LinkedIn optimization.

4. Explore Internship and Job Opportunities

Start your search early to secure your spot in competitive markets.

Research opportunities using Bentley’s CareerEdge platform or LinkedIn.

Attend winter break career events or informational interviews with alumni.

Plan Ahead: Look into on-campus recruiting dates for spring semester to stay ahead of application deadlines.

5. Travel or Spend Time with Loved Ones

Finally, enjoy your time off by doing what brings you joy. Whether it’s visiting your family, traveling to a new place, spending quality time with friends, or even binge-watching your favorite shows, make sure to give yourself the well-deserved rest you need. Also, take a moment to reflect on your blessings and be grateful for what you have—it’s a privilege that some people might not have. Wishing you a restful break and a Merry Christmas!🤶🏼
