LinkedIn’s AI Initiative

As you all may know, LinkedIn, one of the world’s largest professional networking platforms, recently announced plans to expand its use of user data through a new Generative AI Improvement program. Beginning November 20, 2024, LinkedIn will be leveraging data from user profiles, including job titles, skills, and work experience, to train its generative AI models, which power automation tools and content creation features on the platform.

LinkedIn’s new program will collect data from user profiles to train its generative AI models. Generative AI uses machine learning algorithms to create new content, such as text, images, and even code, and has shown great promise in automating repetitive tasks and assisting in content creation. However, with these advancements come data privacy concerns. It’s unclear how this data might be used or shared in the long run.

LinkedIn’s new program will be activated for all users unless they manually opt out, a feature available through the security settings. By opting out, users retain control over how their data is used while continuing to benefit from LinkedIn’s professional networking features.

Following these steps help you opt out of LinkedIn’s Generative AI Program:

  1. Open LinkedIn and navigate to Settings & Privacy.
  1. Go to the Data Privacy section.
  1. Find the option for Generative AI Improvement Program and toggle it off.

As LinkedIn’s initiative shows, generative AI is making its way into various professional sectors. Staying informed about these shifts is relevant for students and early-career professionals preparing to enter the job market, as some tasks could be fully or partially automated in the future. By learning how to use AI tools, students can also gain a competitive edge in the evolving job market. Embracing AI’s benefits while understanding its limitations will allow today’s job seekers to adapt to the changes AI is bringing to workplaces worldwide.
