Following Up After the Career Fair

The Fall 2022 Career Fair was a success this past Wednesday and most likely, you found some companies you would like to work for. Should you follow up? The answer is YES. Career Fairs are a great way to make an introduction but most of the employers there probably saw over 100+ Bentley students. To make them remember who you are, you should send a follow-up email.

Step 1: Express gratitude

The first thing you should do when following up is thank the recruiter for their time. Saying thank you are two words that are so simple yet so important and often forgotten. For instance, you could say something along the lines of, “I wanted to thank you for speaking with me at the Career Fair this past Wednesday. I really appreciate you taking the time to speak to me about…” and go from there. Saying thank you can open so many doors for you.

Step 2: Mention something specific about the conversation you had

When writing your follow-up email, make sure to mention something unique about your conversation to help the recruiter remember who you are. Maybe you talked about a hobby that you share. Mention that! Or, maybe you talked about how your past experiences align with the internship/full-time position they are offering. Here’s an example: “As I mentioned in our conversation, I worked directly with clients in my summer internship at…” This jogs the recruiter’s memory of who you are which will help you move to the next step.

Step 3: Asking for the next step

The last crucial step to take when following up is to ask what is next. This shows recruiters that you are serious about the position and want to move forward. If you do not ask, then you may not get the opportunity to apply or interview. So, say something at the end of your email along the lines of “I would love to set an interview up to further discuss the roles and responsibilities.”

Lastly, make sure to include your resume and LinkedIn profile in your email! Your resume will showcase all the skills you bring to the table and connecting on LinkedIn will help them remember you as well. Send the follow-up email as soon as you can, the sooner the better!
