Alumni Spotlights (and Jobs) from Vistaprint Corporate Solutions

You may know Vistaprint as go-to company for small businesses to create marketing materials including business cards, posters, banners, and 1000s of other customizable products!  While we’ve been successful with these “mom and pop” shops, we saw that there was another customer segment which was constantly reordering larger orders of materials month after month.  A new startup within Vistaprint was born: Vistaprint Corporate Solutions (VCS).  VCS is in the process of growing their Inside Sales team and looking for soon to be May 2017 graduates.  Hear from Stephanie and Oliver, who have been on the job for 6 months now to learn more about the exciting life as a Business Development Representative in this new startup at an established company!

What is your day to day?  Is there a typical day?

Oliver: “I spend every day reaching out to businesses who are interested in buying print materials for their entire organization.  Most of the day is spent on the phone or emailing.  Sometimes folks inquire with us, sometimes we reach out to them, either way I get to learn about business all over North America, which I find incredibly interesting!”

Did you have previous business development experience?  If no, how were you trained?

Stephanie: “I really haven’t had any professional business development experience before coming into this role, and sales was all new to me. I actually never pictured myself in sales! During my first week I had extensive training with my team to get to learn the product, the customers, and Vistaprint Corporate as a whole. For about three months after that, my new knowledge and skills were put to the test as I continued to get up to speed with all of the other BDRs that had started before me.”

What is your favorite part of the role?

Stephanie: “My favorite part of this role is working with many different people every day on their branding for their company. I like the fact that this is also a startup within a large company, and because of that we have a lot of say in how we improve our own processes.”

Oliver: “My favorite part of the role is landing a big business.  When I get a partner who is spending six figures on their print materials, it really gets me excited as I know that they will not only be a challenge, but will be a great account to help the team achieve sales goals.”

How does it feel to work for a new business entity within Vistaprint?

Stephanie: “I previously interned with Vistaprint for two summers before I accepted a full time position, and I have always thought that Vistaprint has had a “startup” feel. Vistaprint Corporate is definitely a new business entity within Vistaprint, and it’s really cool to have both the small business and large business feel at the same time. We have a lot of input in how we set the stage for the success of our company.”

What makes Business Development different at Vistaprint Corporate Solutions vs a similar role at another company?

Oliver: “Take an entry level sales position at larger, older company and compare it to ours.  There it’s incredibly regimented, and you’re one of hundreds if not thousands of folks at that position.  I’m in a team of four.  I have a huge say on how things go, how they are built, and why we do processes a certain way.  That is WAY better.”
