Winter break (or summer) is a great time to get some hands on experience with nonprofits. Find an organization whose mission aligns with your interests and volunteer some of your break to get involved.
I have spent a week of all of my winter breaks volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief and in the process found a passion of mine that I didn’t know existed. Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief provides relief to victims of natural disasters in two phases: cleanup and rebuild. I have participated in both phases and learned that I loved doing the work and now one of my career goals is to work for a disaster relief agency. I was also able to observe the way that Samaritan’s Purse operates and I was extremely impressed with the professional way that they run on a day to day basis. This experience also influenced what I want to do upon graduating. I am currently in the interview process for a Global Intern position with Samaritan’s Purse to serve at one of their international field sites for the summer. Fingers crossed!!
